Since I was a teenager, I was certain God had called me to be a missionary, a
teacher and a preacher. And it happened. My wife Mary and I spent seventeen
years in Africa, and twenty-four years as Vice President of Missions with Canada’s
100 Huntley Street Ministry. I have visited about seventy countries in the
world in mission outreaches, relief and development.
I had never realized that a part of the Gospel was more than preaching,
teaching and evangelising. Somewhere along this road of life and what
I saw in those many countries, it dawned on me that I was being given
a personal and specific calling. That’s why I do what I do, and
weep when I see the needs of places such as Sudan. Without question,
southern Sudan is the most unpublicised and devastated piece of real
estate in the world.
I have seen first hand the realities of earthquakes in Honduras, famine
in Ethiopia, the maimed from war in Sierra Leone and the results of floods
in various places. But nothing compares in my mind with what has been
happening to southern Sudan for fifty years.
Sudan is the largest country in Africa. The needs are too many to tackle.
One person or one ministry can only do so much. But o ur understanding
of God determines not just what we believe, but how we live and relate
to others. Our understanding of God determines what we do, and with what
intensity. Both time and eternity need to be kept in mind as we all serve
God, the Almighty.
So! What to do?
Here’s what I am trying to do under God with the help of supporters.
I have travelled, written books, had Press Conferences, taken risks,
both on radio and TV, and in going to Sudan. I have walked too close
to mine fields. I had bullets snap past my ear. I have been ambushed
at gunpoint. I want to share some of that with you.
